Born Randy Bruce Traywick on May 4, 1959, in Marshville, North Carolina, Travis grew up in a modest household.
His mother, Bobbie, worked in a textile factory, while his father, Harold, owned a construction business and was also a turkey farmer, horse breeder, and substitute teacher.
Travis was one of six children, and his father strongly encouraged his early interest in music. By age 8, Travis was singing in the church choir and playing the guitar, and by 10, he and his brother Ricky formed a band called The Traywick Brothers. They performed at talent shows and local clubs, honing their craft from a young age.
However, Travis struggled during his teenage years, dropping out of high school and getting into trouble with the law for offenses such as burglary and auto theft.
In 1975, after winning a talent contest at the Charlotte nightclub Country City USA, he caught the attention of the club’s owner, Elizabeth Hatcher.
Hatcher hired him as a cook and allowed him to perform regularly. After yet another brush with the law, Hatcher became Travis’ legal guardian, and later, his manager.
In 1978, he began recording music for Paula Records, releasing singles like “Dreamin'” and “She’s My Woman.”
In 1982, Hatcher left her husband and moved to Nashville with Travis, and their relationship eventually turned romantic, leading to their marriage nearly a decade later.
Personal Life
Randy Travis married Elizabeth Hatcher, who is 16 years older, on May 31, 1991. The couple divorced in 2010 after nearly two decades of marriage. In 2015, Travis married Mary Davis.
Travis has faced some personal challenges, including several run-ins with the law. In February 2012, he was arrested for public intoxication in Sanger, Texas, and later that year, he was arrested again after crashing his car and being found naked on the road.
Travis had tried to buy cigarettes while nude at a convenience store before being apprehended by the police. He eventually pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January 2013, receiving a sentence of two years’ probation, a 180-day suspended jail sentence, and a $2,000 fine.
Randy Travis has also made notable investments in real estate. In 2002, he constructed a sprawling 20,000-square-foot “luxury ranch” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, set on 220 acres of land.
The estate boasts a range of amenities, including a shooting range, bowling alley, gym, horse stables, 10 fireplaces, and a swimming pool.
Initially listed for $14.7 million in 2014, the property underwent several price reductions over the years before its sale status was marked as pending in November 2021, with the price last listed at $8.5 million.
In addition to his New Mexico ranch, Travis sold his 1,800-square-foot Nashville condo in 2019 for $545,000, having originally purchased it for $500,000 in 2010.
